As with any animals, the more you can prevent crowding too many together and the cleaner their habitat, the better.

The optimum environment is to give the ducks access to a grazing area with grass and plant life. You should try to maximize the size of this area. It will allow them to hunt for insects, as well as provide a place for their poop to filter into the ground. Plants are important in this respect.

The best way to fight salmonella and other diseases is to provide a large, clean environment, make sure they are eating high quality food, prevent over-crowding, and regularly clean their food troughs and equipment.

If you want to elaborate on the conflicting information you read, I'd be happy to read it and try to help you further.
